Heart attack...

Myocardial Infarction[MI] or in plain english heart attack kills people....in just a 6 hours shift yesterday i came across 4 such situations..all of them referred from private physicians...unfortunately these poor people keep roaming from one practitioner to another with no treatment and finally end up here losing that precious 3 hour window period where any medical intervention perhaps will save his life.....

p.s-

am more worried about these atypical presentations[unusual symptoms] of MI...like this one guy yesterday who came with an upper abdominal pain and when i did a fresh Ecg[high suspicion coz of age and associated diabetes] turned out to be angina.....this patient could have been easily neglected as a case of gastritis and put on wrong drugs...

World Tb day-24th march

World TB Day is observed each year on March 24 to commemorate the date in 1882 when Dr. Robert Koch announced the discovery of Mycobacterium tuberculosis, the bacterium that causes tuberculosis (TB). Worldwide, TB remains one of the leading causes of death from infectious disease. An estimated 2 billion persons are infected with M. tuberculosis (1). In 2006, approximately 9.2 million persons became ill from TB, and 1.7 million died from the disease (1). World TB Day provides an opportunity for TB programs, nongovernmental organizations, and other partners to describe problems and solutions related to the TB pandemic and to support worldwide TB control efforts. The theme for World TB Day 2009 is "I Am Stopping TB” and it challenges people all over the world to do their part to fight tuberculosis. On 24 March 2009, people from all over the globe will be taking part in the World TB Day campaign and the Health Department encourages you to join us in this effort by planning events in your community.

Preventive measures-

  • Keep your immune system healthy. Eat plenty of healthy foods including fruits and vegetables, get enough sleep, and exercise at least 30 minutes a day most days of the week to keep your immune system in top form.
  • Get tested regularly. Experts advise people who have a high risk of TB to get a skin test once a year. This includes people with HIV or other conditions that weaken the immune system, people who live or work in a prison or nursing home, health care workers, people from countries with high rates of TB, and others in high-risk groups.
  • Consider preventive therapy. If you test positive for latent TB infection, your doctor will likely advise you to take medications to reduce your risk of developing active TB. Vaccination with BCG isn't recommended for general use in the United States, because it isn't very effective in adults and it causes a false-positive result on a Mantoux skin test. But the vaccine is often given to infants in countries where TB is more common. Vaccination can prevent severe TB in children. Researchers are working on developing a more effective TB vaccine.
  • Finish your entire course of medication. This is the most important step you can take to protect yourself and others from TB. When you stop treatment early or skip doses, TB bacteria have a chance to develop mutations that allow them to survive the most potent TB drugs. The resulting drug-resistant strains are much more deadly and difficult to treat.

Mouse turns 40

The humble computer mouse celebrates its 40th anniversary today.

On 9 December 1968 hi-tech visionary Douglas Engelbart first used one to demonstrate novel ways of working with computers.

The first mouse that Dr Engelbart used in the demo at the Fall Joint Computer Conference (FJCC) was made of wood and had one button.

Much of the technology shown off in the demo inspired the creation of the hardware and software now widely used.

A day of celebration is planned in California to mark the 40th anniversary; with many of the researchers behind the original demo reunited to mark the event.

Paying the price

Office workers using computers constantly are at risk from repetitive strain injury (RSI), more recently known as non-specific arm pain (NSAP)
This is a collection of symptoms covering work-related upper limb problems, which can affect the hands, wrists, necks, arms and upper back

TIPS TO AVOID RSI
Try to avoid prolonged or repetitive tasks
Use both hands
Take short breaks rather than one long one
Keep warm - cold muscles don't extend properly
Report pain or other symptoms straight away
Use a headset when talking and typing
Rotate work tasks to vary routine
Follow guidance from your individual assessment
Customize your mouse settings to use it occasionally with your other hand

Smoking banned in India

The ban on lighting up rolled tobacco in public places came into effect from Thursday with hotels, restaurants, pubs, offices and even the international airports becoming out of bounds for smokers.

The ban will also cover even hookah bars and pubs as well as private offices and public places like bus stops.

Union Health Ministry issued a notification for the ban under the Cigarettes and Other Tobacco Products (Prohibition of Advertisement and Regulation of Trade and Commerce, Production, Supply and Distribution), Act 2003.

The ban has evoked mixed response from smokers and non-smokers with some calling it a "draconian" measure while others consider it a "god-send" gift that may help them in

bringing down the intake of nicotine and reduce cutting a hole in their wallets

World Heart Day

Heart disease is going up at an alarming rate due to irregular lifestyle, obesity, hypertension and diabetes. Experts believe that by 2010 India will top the world chart in heart diseases and there will be a 200% increase in heart ailments among youth
That’s the reason why this year’s World Heart Day[last Sunday of every september] is urging people to "Know Your Risk". It’s a call to action to help people to understand their personal risk for cardiovascular disease including high blood pressure, cholesterol and blood sugar. There are five strategies to keep your heart healthy. These strategies include not "smoking or using tobacco products, to be active, to eat a heart-healthy diet, to maintain a healthy weight and get regular health screening"
