The ugly duckling syndrome

"The Ugly Duckling" tells the story of a cygnet ostracized by his fellow barnyard fowl because of his perceived homeliness. To his delight (and to the surprise of others), he matures into a graceful swan, the most beautiful bird of all. With "Thumbelina" and other tales, "The Ugly Duckling" demonstrates Andersen's identification with, and his sympathies for, the 'outsider' searching for his or her place in society.

this is in particularly true to those who get affected due a genetic cause[downs, albinos] like one patient who had this rare skin disorder[called xeroderma pigmentosa] coz of which her skin texture was completely lost and was discarded by her own father[due to nonacceptance] and hence come to our department for psychiatric evaluation.
p.s
- but the truth is its her father who needed this and unfortunately no one here[in govn hosp] has the time and patience to do that.

Its a pity that in India there is so much stigma attached to looks. Its awful how such narrow minded parents treat their afflicted children this way!!!...Ur right bout the father needing psychiatric evaluation!!!

always the stigma in developing countries, it happens here too. its up to the new generation of doctors to take this as a cause to correct things.

hope she is will be ok to face an equally turbulent world out there.
