It looks like a big chunk of the intestine, the whole ileum?
It looks very different from those you see during your anatomy sessions on dried specimens.

Hey man, I'm wondering to see all these comments...Don't know how many of them are medicoes....Anyway, let me remind you the facts....The total length of intestines in man is around 7.5 metres - small intestines(6 metres)and colon(1.5 metres) roughly. Out of 6 metres length of small intestine, only the first 25 cm is constituted by Duodenum(which is completely retroperitoneal),the remaining 575 cm(roughly)is constituted by Jejunum and Ileum(Both of which are Intraperitoneal). The demarcation between Jejunum and Ileum is not clearly defined, and arbitrarily the Jejunum contitutes the Proximal third of the Intraperitoneal portion. So the length of the Ileum must be around 380 cm(i.e. 3.8 metres). And I'm sure the length of the ileum removed(as shown in ur picture would not be more than 1 or 1.5 metres). Soooooooo I guess there is no problem for the patient with this operation as still he has atleast 2.3 metres of Ileum for effective absorption of the digested contents....Am I right dude???
