Another year goes by

Another year goes by,only 1 day until a new year begins and now is the right time to reflect on the passing year.

There have been many high and few low points[which am not going to cribble abt and write here] and would like to share some of them with you guys....

Highs
1) icmr project-this year got my recognition certificate for the completion of the ICMR project in Pathology,it was really a very nice eye opening learning experience working with our hospital's best pathologists and the patients together.

2) learning medicine-only after coming into the final i really realized and learned the art of med,its highs and lows, minute and the ability to diagnose diseases from the patients[they are the ones who really teach u!]..as Voltaire had once said "the art of medicine consists in amusing the patient while nature cures the disease"...hope some day very soon i get this wisdom:)

3) blogging-this was my first yr into blogging and i enjoyed it and am happy to have made so many good friends.

some of my so called "Resolutions" for the coming year-
1)start preparing for pg entrance exams as soon as i get into internship[this is a must!]
2)continue with my jogging once again
3)learn from my internship as much as possible
hope i do them sincerely

wish u guys a very happy and prosperous New Year ahead:)

p.s-my final year exams are from 5th to 13th jan-7 papers in 9 days..until then this blog will be inactive:)

during the night

"The time has now come. I will recommend to the party that it should consider Omar Abdullah for the Chief Minister's post. I thought over the issue during the night," he[Farook Abdulla] said with Omar by his side.

Now the state should have a younger Chief Minister because there are a lot of things to do, the 72-year-old leader said.

National Conference patron Farooq Abdullah today said this to his party after J-K elections.

nice little joke!

LAWYERS Vs INSURANCE

This is the best lawyer story of the year, decade, and probably the
century.

A Charlotte, NC, lawyer purchased a box of very rare and expensive cigars,
then insured them against fire among other things. Within a month having
smoked his entire stockpile of these great cigars and without yet having
made even his first premium payment on the policy, the lawyer filed a
claim against the insurance company. In his claim, the lawyer stated the
cigars were lost "in a series of small fires."

The insurance company refused to pay, citing the obvious reason: that the
man had consumed the cigars in the normal fashion. The lawyer sued .. and
won!

In delivering the ruling, the judge agreed with the insurance company that
the claim was frivolous. The Judge stated, nevertheless, that the lawyer
held a policy from the company in which it had warranted that the cigars
were insurable and also guaranteed that it would insure them against fire,
without defining what is considered to be unacceptable fire, and was
obligated to pay the claim. Rather than endure lengthy and costly appeal
process, the insurance company accepted the ruling and paid $15,000 to the
lawyer for his loss of the rare cigars lost in the "fires."

NOW FOR THE BEST PART...

After the lawyer cashed the check, the insurance company had him arrested
on 24 counts of ARSON!!!!

With his own insurance claim and testimony from the previous case being
used against him, the lawyer was convicted of intentionally burning his
insured property and was sentenced to 24 months in jail and a $24,000
fine.

This is a true story and was the 1st place winner in the recent Criminal
Lawyers Awa
rd Contest.

Pulse polio

Today[21st december] is the 1st phase of the two-phase pulse polio campaign[2nd phase is on feb1st] to be held all over India during which Oral polio drops will be administered to about two lakh children in the 0-5 age group.

About the Programme-

In pursuance of the World Health Assembly 1988, to eradicate polio by year 2000 AD. The Pulse Polio Immunization, in addition to routine polio immunization, was first started in the year 1995. Every child below 3 years of age was given two doses of oral polio drops with one month apart[September to feb-time of low transmission of this virus]. In order to accelerate pace of polio eradication, the target age was increased to cover children below 5 years of age from 1996.

The modified IPPI (Intensified Pulse Polio Immunization) strategy included vaccination of children through fixed booth approach on first day, followed by extensive house-to-house search of missed children for vaccination. During these years new strategies were introduced to cover endemic states and the results were good. At present mostly the transmission is going in Uttar Pradesh & Bihar.

our college participation-
Since our college is a Teritary Centre many nearby community centers are attached to it and as a part of our community medicine we were a part of 2005-2006 campaign...it was quite a good experience. The programme is conducted in 4 days, first day being the booth approach where 3-4 students were assigned to a booth[my place was in some temple!!] from morning to evening and on the other 3 days there will be extensive house to house search[each day 200-250 houses] for the children which are later recorded in a file and sent to the respective community centreheads...in the end we were paid some money and a certificate[10marks in psm are assighned to it]!!...

lets make this years campaign successfull by giving our full cooperation and participation:)

Delivery vs Engagement

Mechanism of delivery of a baby can always be compared to a girls Engagement[in India!]...

When a girl gets engaged[Engagement-1] and enters her in-laws house for the first time she greets them first[Flexion-2] and then turns and haves a quick glance[Internal rotation-3] at her future husband..impressed by all this she is then crowned[Crowning-4] by the pujari who is in turn a doc-DR[Delivery of head and Restitution-5,6] and at last she gets married in a exterior hall[External rotation-7] and conceives later and delivers[Delivery of shoulder-8]

Quote-Happiness

"Many people think that if they were only in some other place,or had some other job, they would be happy.Well that is doubtful. So get as much happiness out of what you are doing as you can and don't put off being happy until some future date."

Memory

Memory is one thing which everyone cares about and would do just anything to have it..i have seen many people complaining abt it that they just dont remember anything and everything...but how many of those really work for it[like any sports or art] sincerely??...only a hand full!!...
When i was in 2nd year mbbs my main problem was to remember things as it is from the text[to score marks!!] and many times used to get frustrated for not able to do so...
One day by chance i got hold of this wonder book written by H.Lorayne.In this book he explains many good practical techniques[like link system, peg, mnemonics and many more] with demonstrations...i have tried using these techniques and have found them to be quite useful!!...

check these out[Visualization technique has been applied here]

1)Indications of induction of labour-

2) 10 features of severe Pre-eclampsia

3) imagine a leg in an AC...just imagine and keep this picture in your mind...Legionnaire organism[causes pneumonia] common source of infection is contaminated AC...

p.s-if am using these techniques it doesnt mean i have a good memory..it just makes studying more interesting and interactive
sorry for the poor quality of the snaps:)

Mouse turns 40

The humble computer mouse celebrates its 40th anniversary today.

On 9 December 1968 hi-tech visionary Douglas Engelbart first used one to demonstrate novel ways of working with computers.

The first mouse that Dr Engelbart used in the demo at the Fall Joint Computer Conference (FJCC) was made of wood and had one button.

Much of the technology shown off in the demo inspired the creation of the hardware and software now widely used.

A day of celebration is planned in California to mark the 40th anniversary; with many of the researchers behind the original demo reunited to mark the event.

Paying the price

Office workers using computers constantly are at risk from repetitive strain injury (RSI), more recently known as non-specific arm pain (NSAP)
This is a collection of symptoms covering work-related upper limb problems, which can affect the hands, wrists, necks, arms and upper back

TIPS TO AVOID RSI
Try to avoid prolonged or repetitive tasks
Use both hands
Take short breaks rather than one long one
Keep warm - cold muscles don't extend properly
Report pain or other symptoms straight away
Use a headset when talking and typing
Rotate work tasks to vary routine
Follow guidance from your individual assessment
Customize your mouse settings to use it occasionally with your other hand
