flashback (1)-Papillon levefre syndrome

what is papillon levefre syndrome?...ever heard about it?...probably not because its incidence rate is about 1-4 per million people [its so rare that its not even mentioned in our paediatrics text] .When i was posted in paediatrics last year i had come across a patient suffering from this .....this is a very rare condition characterized by skin lesions caused by hyperkeratosis [like excess roughness], and severe periodontal destruction[early teeth eruption].She was a girl of about 10 years and due to her recurrent teeth infection [and eruption] she had problems in chewing and because of this she had grade 1 malnutrition due to inadequate food intake. On further inquiring about her family history[part of our history taking format] came to know that one of her younger brother was mentally retarded and was recommended to NIMHANS for further evaluation[even showed us the letter of recommendation by one of her family physician].She[mother] even told us proudly that she was quite bright in her academics!.Felt really sorry for the mother and appreciated her cooperation to us inspite of all this!.... the same case was given to me for internal assessment[the reason she had got admitted was that she had chronic liver infection] and so it was little bit easy for me to take history and present the case.... in the end as a part of my appreciation to the girl presented her 3 chocolates and made her feel important!!:)
